The great outdoors
The children at Manaccan Pre-School Playgroup can’t wait to get their hands dirty, thanks to a grant received from the Cornwall Community Foundation (CCF), one of the largest independent charities in the county. As a result of being awarded £5,600 by the CCF, a whole world of delights has been opened up for these hungry young minds. A good part of the grant was put towards buying a polytunnel in which the children have been able to grow their own plants, fruit and vegetables that are enjoyed at home and school; and a newly installed wormery, also bought with grant funds, quickly deals with any waste that is generated. “It’s like having an additional classroom,” said a Playgroup spokesperson, “and means the learning can go on even if the weather isn’t co-operating.”
The rest of the money was used to fund a willow teepee planted in the garden that will grow with the children; benches and tables in the playground that can be set up for particular games or just provide a place to relax; wooden outdoor musical instruments such as pipes, a drum and “singing bowls”; and interactive mechanics, including a large marble run.
The whole project has involved many in the community, from parents helping to make it happen and keep the polytunnel in check to local farmers giving the children demonstrations of planting on a larger level. “What we have been able to achieve with this grant has contributed a host of new experiences to the children’s education,” said a parent. “It has been really exciting to watch each new facet of the garden appear.”

Little ones get lessons in life-saving
The thought of being whisked away in an ambulance may be less of a daunting one for the pupils of Manaccan school, thanks to a recent visit from the ambulance service.
The crew parked their vehicle outside the school last Wednesday morning so all the children, aged 2 to 11, were able to wander around in the back of the ambulance, sit up front and get behind the wheel.
All the while Emergency Care Assistants Emma Brown and Rob Pascoe were on hand to answer their questions which ranged from "how fast can you really go?" to "does that tube really suck your brains out?"
'They loved it,' said Rob, 'and hopefully it won’t be a frightening experience in the unlikely event that one of them has to get into an ambulance in the future, or ever needs to wear an oxygen mask.'
Rob and Emma also showed the children how to find their pulse and explained what to do in an emergency. Then came the most requested demonstration of all: the flashing lights and sirens!
Soon after the ambulance headed back to its station at Threemilestone, Truro, for a good clean-up before its next shift, leaving a happy school to conintue with their fancy dress celebration of World Book Day.
'It was wonderful of the crew to give up their time to come out to us,' said Jo Foreman, playgroup assistant. 'The children have loved it and it’s really helped to demystify what a trip in an ambulance might mean.'
